The Story · 01

I started Jonathan Mills Media in 2014 out of a one-room office above a guitar shop on Water Street, with a camera I'd saved up for and a single client who paid in jewelry credit.

Twelve years in, the office is bigger and the camera is paid for. The work is mostly the same — sitting down with people who do something quietly excellent and making a film about it. I've been the contracted lead videographer for James Avery for four years, the documentary partner for Peterson Health for three, and the cinematographer behind a lot of Hill Country listings you've probably scrolled past on Zillow.

Before any of that, I was a sound engineer. I tracked records out of a basement studio in Austin for half a decade. That work is gone now — the gear sold, the room rented to someone with better hours — but it left two things behind: an ear for what makes a story land, and an obsession with quiet rooms.

The thing I keep coming back to is this: a brand film should do what a good piece of writing does — make the audience feel like they were let in on something true. The rest is craft and patience.

I want every film to feel like the room I made it in — slow, intentional, and a little quieter than what's on TV.

How we work · Three principles

The studio runs on three commitments.

01

Listen before we shoot.

Every project starts with a two-hour discovery call, in person where possible. We map what you want the audience to feel — not the brief, the feeling. The shoot is shorter when the listening was longer.

02

Small crew. Calm set.

One to six people, depending on the day. The advantage isn't budget — it's that subjects forget the camera is there. The best moments come from people who stopped performing forty minutes ago.

03

Edit like a writer.

Two rounds of revisions, masters delivered in every cut you'll need (web, social, broadcast). Originals archived, available for any future project. I treat the edit like prose — every shot earns its place.

Working together

Let's sit down. Two hours, no obligation.

I do my best work for clients I actually like. The discovery call is how we figure that out — for both of us.
